Linda coughed painfully. She clutched 3 year-old Jessica tightly.
“MA’AM! WE NEED TO MOVE BACK – NOW!” shouted a nearby fireman, “THE FIRE’S ABOUT TO GET OUT OF CONTROL!”
Linda hurried backwards along with the other residents. They had escaped moments  before their floor was engulfed in flames.
“IS THERE ANYONE ELSE LEFT UP THERE? ” the harried fireman called to the crowd. Jessica opened her mouth to speak but Linda clapped her hand over her daughter’s mouth. She added her voice to the chorus of “NO’s!”.
Hugging Jessica, Linda sighed. She’d locked Jake in the apartment.
A man ought not to hurt his family.
